BANDITS AT HARBIN.

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING. WOMAN SHOT DEAD. SHANGHAI, Oct. 12. Mrs Woodroff, wife of an accountant of the British-American Tobacco Company stationed at Harbin, was taking her children to school in a motor car when she encountered bandits.

The chauffeur turned sharply to avoid them when he was shot and wounded. Mrs Woodroff jumped from the car with the children and she was shot dead. The children escaped to an adjacent Russian home. Later details reveal that three armed bandits in military /uniform held up the car which was driven by a young Russian and attempted to kidnap the children. ■ Mrs Woodroff fought tigerishly, aided by the chauffeur and another Russian. The mother was shot dead and tho two Russians wounded.

The police were attracted by the shooting and the bandits took to their heels, but one was shot dead and another wounded and captured. The third escaped. The outrage took place in broad daylight and has distressed the foreign community.
