COUNTRY PARTY

POLITICS IN AUSTRALIA. OFFER OF PORTFOLIOS. BASIS OF NEGOTIATIONS, (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received October 13, 10.5 a.m. CANBERRA, Oct. 13. The offer by the Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, of three portfolios to membez-s- of the Country Party was the subject of a lengthy discussion by the Countiy Pai'ty, after which it was decided to accept Mr Lyons’s letter as the basis of future negotiations. The attitude of the Country Party is that it must preserve its identity and that it cannot permit Mr Lyons to select from it his Minister's. The party also desii-es, before accepting seats in the Ministi-y, to settle its future policy on matters affecting the producers, including that of the exchange. The Country Party passed a resolution of confidence in its leader, Dr Earle Page. Mr Lyons later sent a letter to Dr Earle Page emphasising that his letter was not intended to bo an invitation to a general discussion and asking whether the proposal was acceptable to the Country Papty or not.
