YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. Some fluctuations were noticeable l on the Wellington stock and ahare market yesterday, but on tho whole values were fairly steady. Thoro was again a good inquiry for Government loans, slight advances in bids being recorded in some cases. Tho 44 per oonts., 1939 and 1938, moved up 2s 6d to 5s to £95 2s 6d and £95 ss. Tho 64 per cents., 1936 and 1937, were steady at £99 7s 6d, sellers asking par for the 1936 bonds and the September, 1937, stocks. The 5s per cent, 1937, were 5s firmer at £96 ss. Wellington Gas 64 per cent, debentures were wanted at par, sellers asking £lO2 Wellington Harbour Board 54 per cents., 1940, were steaxiy at £99 15s. Bank of New Zealand had five sales at 465. Closing buyers offored 45s 9d, with sellers at 46s 2d. The long term mortgage shares eased another 3d to 295, Australasias mado a sharp advanoo of 3& fid to £lO, but sellers stayed out. Commercial of Australia ordinaries were done at 15s 6d, buyers offering 14s 5d at the close. Now South Wales firmed 2s 6d to £2B, sellers staying at £2B 10s. Union of Australia wore Is easier at £7 15s. Goldsbrough, Morts allowed a further doclino to 23s 6d, sellers asking 24s Id. There were sellers of New Zealand Loan and Morcantiles at £SB ss. An improved inquiry for gas shares was recorded, Wellington preference firming 9d to 18s. In the insurance section prices showed no change, except in the caso of Nationals, which.eased 5d to 14s, sellers asking 14s 7d. New Zealand Breweries had a sale on ’chango at 28s 6d, the closing quotations being buyers 28s 4d, sellers* 295. British Tobacco ordinaries were 3d easier at 31s 3d, sellers t32s 9d.
