PRIZE IN SWEEPSTAKE.

LUCKY AUCKLANDERS.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 13. There was jubiliation in a Mount Eden home at twenty minutes to four this - morning when Mr J. W. B. Cornes was told by telephone that Sandwich had run third in the Cesarewitch Stakes. Mr Cornes, aged 30, and his father are in partnership as grocers and jointly held the ticket in an Irish sweepstakes. When they learned that Francis Ritchie, aged 15, wlro lives only a few doors away, had also drawn a horse they came to an agreement with him under which if either Sandwich or Bonny Brighteyes (Francis Ritchie’s horse) gained a place the owner of the winning ticket would pay the others £SOOO for first, £2500 for second and £ISOO, for third. So Master Ritchie, besides £7OO odd, which lie receives for drawing Bonny Brighteyes will get £ISOO out of the Cornes prize of £IO,OOO. The Cornes families, senior and junior, and the Ritchie family endeavoured vainly to hear the result of the race by shortwave radio, but the news eventually reached them by cable. The £IO,OOO prize will be increased by about £IOOO through the exchange. ANOTHER PRIZE-WINNER.

Another Aucklander shares in the prize-money from the sweepstake on the Cesarewitcli. Yesterday the fact that she had won a cash prize of £IOO was made known to Miss Catherine Redhead, Takutai Street, Parnell, in a cable.

A cablegram relating to tire above appears on page 7.
