SPORTING

PREPARATIONS FOR MASTERTON WORKERS AT AAVAPUNI. (By “Binocular.”) Beneficial rain has fallen during the past few days and the tracks at Awapuni are now in great order, although they are by no means fast. AVork this morning was in view of Masterton and other engagements.

Minstrel Lad, who claims an engagement in the Lainsdowue Hlundicap, was one of the pre-breakfast workers. The Nigger Minstrel three-year-old was restricted to pacework, but he looks in great order and should show up in his race. Hunter’s Moon (Anderson) ran three furlongs on t|he course proper —(the flags being well out —in 39 secs. Unlucky at his one appearance at Otaki, the Hunting Song gelding should bring some further stake money to his Ceylon owner in the hack scurry at Masterton. „ Twelve months ago Mrs McDonald presented Inflation and La Moderne in the Nursery Handicap at Mastert-on to run first and second, although it was La Moderne which was preferred in the betting market. On this occasion the lady mentor will likewise have a brace figuring therein in Boudoir and the Rosewing—Linlass fiily who will race under the cognomen of AA r ait and See. R. J. Mackie or J. M. Pine will pilot Boudoir, but the stable apprentice, R. Chisholm, will ride AVait and See. The pair have both displayed plenty of promise in their track essays and should make a very creditable showing. , . Blacksmith is largely restricted to pacework these days and the Arrowsmith gelding is thriving on it. Although he has had little racing this season, Blacksmith should run out a mile in comfort. . The Maiden Stakes candidate, Headland (C. Robinson), had Prince Mercia (O. Thompson) as a partner over five furlongs during the second session. They ran the first two furlongs in 26 secs, and the full distance in 1.8. As both had substantial poundages up and were not asked for their best, it was quite a satisfactory trial. FOR AVELLINGTON.

After Money (McDowell), alone, ran half a mile in 64 ‘2-ssecs. This Paper Money filly is built on attractive lines, but she has not displayed exceptional pace as yet in her work. Nebulae (C. Robinson), who is on the upgrade, rail five furlongs in 1.74. Ho had a substantial weight in the saddle, but did liis work nicely. Beau Gallanto (C. Thompson), who is growing into a most attractive horse, bowled along over a mile under a strong pull in 1.52 2-5. Ho was only allowed to stretch out over the last two furlongs when he finished full of running. Senegal (McDowell) ran half a mile in 55 2-ssec, while Interlocutor, with the same rider in the saddle, later ran the distance in 53 1-5. Interlocutor)*; pace does not appear to have suffered by his enforced let-up after Marton. AVarzone was restricted to pacework on the plough. This mare appears to have benefited by her race at Otaki. She will be ridden by R. C. Miles in her Trentliam engagement. STATUARY’S NEAV. ROLE.

Having despaired of making Statuary into a successful performer on the flat Mr AV. H. Gaisford has handed the’Leighton gelding to L. Knapp to mould into a hurdler. When sent over the battens in company with Riotous, Statuary registered a very promising performance. Joyspear, who is also being put to the jumping game by Knapp, is not showing quite the progress hoped for, and when sent over the battens with Trouble the • Greyspear horse did not display any great confidence. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. Riding engagements announced for tlie Masterton meeting where Palmerston North horsemen are concerned are:—R. Chisholm, AVait and See; H. F. Gray, Forest Stag, King Peg; R. C! Miles, Headland, Blacksmith; S. Anderson, Pegged Exchange, Maypay, Solitaire 11., Arrow Lad, Atliolspear, Hunter’s Moon, Cape Paralii. Three of R. E. Hatch’s boys will be in attendance at the Avondale fixture where K. Voitre will be associated with Princess Doreen, Royal Artist, Tea Trader, Delrain, Currajong, Puss Moth and Imperial Prince. AV. J. McDowell will pilot Landlubber, Gay Cockade, Gay Sheila, La Modems and Bugle Call, and L. Faulkner will ride Hampton Park.
