FEILDING

HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF MANAGERS. The monthly meeting of the Feilding Agricultural High School Board of Managers was held last night, Mr Jas. Knight presiding. Also present were Mrs J. E. Barltrop, Messrs A. C. Buist, T. L. Seddon, J. S. Tingey, A. Williamson, E. H. Brewer, W. W. Andrews, J. B. Stewart and L. J. Wild, principal. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. Campbell, H. Mclntyre and W. A. Salt. Prior to the commencement of tlie meeting, Mr - Wild announced that since the last meeting the annual elections had been held, with the result that Messrs Seddon, Campbell and Buist liad been returned unopposed. Mr Stewart had been elected in the place of Mr A. H. Atkinson, who had not sought re-election. Mr Wild further announced that the meeting was the annual meeting of the board and called for nominations for the position of chairman.

On the motion of Mr Tingey, Mr Knight was unanimously re-elected, the chairman returning thanks for the honour conferred upon him by the board Members and also for the support given him during the year. Mr Knight extended a welcome to Mr Stewart, mentioning the interest Mr Stewart had taken in education in the South Island, and lie was sure that in their new member the board had a decided asset.' Mr Stewart, briefly returned thanks. Mr Buist * was appointed deputy chairman. On the motion of the chairman the board placed on record its appreciation of the services rendered by Mr Atkinson. Mr Knight spoke in ’'terms of appreciation of Mr Atkinson’s work since the inception of the school and regretted he had not be able to continue to act.

Mr Buist supported the chairman in his remarks, the motion being carried unanimously. The meeting then sat for the ordinary monthly meeting of the board. Arising out of the minutes of the last meeting, Mr Wild referred to the purchase'of the boxing equipment for the school from the Feilding Boxing Club. This matter had been referred to the finance committee to deal with, Mr Wild explained, but before the committee had done anything in the matter Mr Knight himself had purchased the equipment from the club and presented it to the school. The announcement was received with applause. Mr Knight read a letter of appreciation lie liad received from Mr Withers, of the Makino School, anent the training and guidance his daughter liad received at the school at the hands of Mr Wild and his staff. The writer spoke in terms of high praise of the work Mr Wild and liis staff were doing in the interests of the pupils and regretted that his daughter had to leave the institution.

Commenting on tlie letter, Mr Knight voiced his personal appreciation at receiving such letters, stating that it gave the board every confidence in Mr Wild and the staff under his direction, to whom the speaker had asked Mr Wild to convey the terms of the letter from Mr Withers.

Formal acknowledgment was received from the Department of Education of the receipt of the board’s letter of protest concerning the - closing of the pottery class. Following on the receipt of a letter from the Education Department concerning the matter, the board left the question of arranging the dates of the terms for 1933 in the hands of the principal. A lengthy and detailed report on the school was forwarded by the Education Department inspectors, the report covering all aspects of the curriculum both academic and agricultural. The report was couched in terms of praise at the work being carried. out, and in moving that the report be received, Mr Tingey said the board could find in it a complete endorsement of its confidence in Mr Wild and his staff, Mr Tingey’s remarks being endorsed by the chairman. The new regulations regarding bursaries were set out in a letter from the Education Department, Mr Wild giving a brief outline of the changes made* —The letter was received without comment.

The chairman gave a brief outline of the business done at the conference of the Technical Education Association, stating that the point of most importance had been the discussions on the employment of boys leaving school.

HEADMASTER’S REPORT. Mr Wild’s monthly report was adopted, inter alia, as follows: —“The school re-opened for the third term on September 13, the roll number being 221. Boarders total 31. Work in the school is going on well, and a very satisfactory report has been sent in by the inspectors of the department. The grounds are in good order, but the cutting of the grass in the playing fields is a problem. The gardens round the school, which are cared'for mainly by the classes in horticulture and which have been regularly marked by a committee of the school council, are looking very well. Considerable interest is also taken in the decoration of the class-rooms, in which connection the expert instruction of. Airs Barltrop has been much appreciated. The annual paper-chase was run last Thursday and resulted in a win for School House, Te Punga ma. being first home and winning Air AVildbore’s cup in time equalling the record made in 1930, namely. 19min. 33isec. Athletics have been the chief outside activity so far this term, the season ending with the annual sports yesterday. Observations made by Air Wild in his report on employment for boys and senior free place examinations are reported elsewhere in this issue. The report was adopted. On the motion of Air Brewer, the board placed on record its appreciation of the act of Air Knight in purchasing the boxing equipment,A motion of thanks to the Press was also carried, Messrs Buist and Knight speaking in terms of appreciation of the value of the piiblicity that was given to school affairs.

OROUA BOAVLXNG CLUB. The following rinks from the Oroua Bowling Club will represent the club at the opening fixtures of adjaoent clubs:-At feilding, at 2 p.m.: Pagan, Telford. Chappell, Goodbeliero (skip) At Northern (car leaves at J. 30 pm)" Cochrane, AViLson, Oakley, Snence (skip). At Palmerston North : (car leaves at 1.30 p.m.): J. Petrie, Buckman, Hicks, Aitken (skip).

ST. JOHN’S TENNIS CLUB. A large number of club members and visitors from neighbouring town and country clubs were present at. the opening of St. John’s Tennis Club for the season yesterday afternoon, the weather proving ideal for the occasion. Tire courts were declared open for the season by Rev. Canon F. H. Petrie, the president, who briefly recounted the steps that had been taken during the past months to improve the club’s courts. The speaker hoped that the club would enjoy a successful season and meet with a fair measure

of. success in. its contests with other clubs. Friendly games were then indulged in, a very pleasant afternoon tea, which was served by the ladies’ committee, adding to the enjoyment of the function. The work that has been done in the top-dressing of the courts was keenly appreciated by the players, the surface of the courts now boing ideal for tennis.
