GROUP TRAFFIC CONTROL.

HALF-YEABLY DETAILS. A report for the six months ended August 31, 1932, was made at yesterday's meeting of the Manawatu County Council (the local body controlling tho system) by -Mr A. K. Drew, county clerk. The report stated that the total mileage covered in the combined districts during the term was 7061, made up as follows:—Manawatu County, 1927 ; Ivairanga, 1361; Oroua, 1633; Kiwitca, 1406; Pohangina, 744. The main roads have received constant patrol and attention has been given to all other roads that carry regular traffic. The inspector has made regular calls at the different county offices to receive any special complaints,” the report added. “The total offences detected in the various counties numbered 115, the details of which are as follow: Manawatu county, 18; Kairanga, 54; Oroua 30; Kiwitea, 11; Pohangina 2. Of the above 100 eases have been before Court and lines inflicted, 13 were withdrawn and 2 were dismissed by Court. The totai lines were £lO2 15s, distributed as follow;.—Manawatu, £3l ss; Kairanga, £3O; Oroua, £2B; Kiwitea, £9 10s; Pohangina, £4. The full particulars of the offences reported are as follows: — Failing to obtain heavy traffic licenses, 3 ; loading in excess of classification, 7 ; using vehicle with wrong number plates, 2; driving without licenses, 54; cutting inside white lines at corners, 23; no lights on vehicles, 2; no rear vision mirror, 2; wandering stock on highways, 17; sundry, 5. Of the 57 Court cases pending at the date of the last report fines were inflicted totalling 52s 15s made up as follow: —Manawatu, £1 10s; Kairanga, £4; Oroua, £47 ss. At the request of tho Commissioner of Transport and with the consent of the Main Highways Board and the representative county councils, the operations of the inspector have been extended to include the supervision of passenger services coming under the Transport Licensing Act, within this district.

“ltegarding the question of the pooling of fines, this matter has been brought before the Minister by other local bodies who are operating under tho group traffic control schemes, but up to this date nothing has been done. It is proposed to hold a meeting of county delegates at Fcilding early in November as the scheme will have been in operation twelve months by then.”
