SUMMER SPORT

BOWLING, CROQUET AND TENNIS

TERRACE END CLUB OPENS. Pleasantly warm conditions prevailed this afternoon, when the Terrace End Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club opened its 1932-33 season. There was a large attendance of members of each section when the season was declared open by Mr S. H. Snell, the president of the club. Unfortunately, the heavy rain which fell last evening rendered the bowling and croquet greens unfit for play, but the Manawatu Club generously accommodated four rinks of bowlers. The visitors included bowlers from Pahiatua and several city cluhs, the Wairarapa, Levin, Foxton and Feilding Clubs forwarding apologies for absejnce. Prior to calling upon Mrs J. Davidson' to throw up the first jack and trundle the first bowl, Mr Snell expressed appreciation for being elected president, and apologised for the absence of Mr A. E. Hansford and Mr J. A. Nash, M.P. Although the rain had been of very great benefit to the club’s greens it had softened them too greatly for play, he said. The thanks of members were duo to the green supervisor, Mr J. Davidson, and his assistant, Mr E. .Anderson, for their splendid work last season; to Mrs Da.vidson and Mrs Scroggs, who had worked well in the croquet section, and to Mr M. Scott, an outstandingly faithful tennis enthusiast. Mr Snell referred to the bereavement sustained by the former green super-, visor, Mr J*. Wallace, who had recently lost his wife. He. would have tho sincere condolences of all the members and Visitors present. Bowlers in particular would also sympathise with the relatives of the late Mr M. J. Suhan, of the Levin Club, who was a bowler known all over the Dominion, Mr Snell added.

Before presenting the trophies won last year, Mr Snell thanked the visitors for their attendance and asked them to oonvey- to their clubs best wishes for the coming season. They would be welcomed at any time during the season to the Terrace End Club s greens. He then made presentations to the following winners iof trophies; Croquet championship, Mrs P. Duncalf; tennis championship, Mr J. Sorenson. Bowling: Champion pairs, Messrs 0. M. Christensen and H. Johnson ; champion singles, Mr P. Childs; handicap singles, Mr J. Davidson ; handicap pairs, Messrs J. Mochan and J. Thompson. An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the club. Tennis was played on the only hard court available and bridge and euchre coinpetitions were arranged in the. pavilion.
