LOCAL SUCCESSES AT WANGANUI

In the amateur wrestling matches at Wanganui on Monday night, two Palmerston North entrants were siiccessful. H. Benton (lOst) beat the Wanganui champion, Ben Bullock (lOst 71b.) in a willing bout. Benton displayed attractive ringcraft and secured a fall in the first round with a body press. Bullock left himself open to lieadlocks and the Palmerston North boy lost no opportunity in applying them. In the second round, Bullock proved to be the aggressor at the start, but Benton applied a throwing headlock when the pair came to their feet. ' Bullock tried for a buttock throw, but missed, and Benton applied a head and arm-bar, from which Bullock was lucky to escape; Benton apparently was playing for time and maintained an armlock, but Bullock broke clear and the gong saved him. • Newth (12st) beat Marsh (list 91bs). Newth gained a body press in the first round, but had his hand under his opponent’s shoulder when the order came to break away. Newth had the best of the round. Marsh was aggressive at the start of the second round, Newth using the ropes. Marsh broke clear when Newth had a leg on the ropes and was at a disadvantage. In the final round Newth got a body press and a fall.
