RACING NEWS

FROM STABLEAND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”)

Hunting Boy pulled up lame after contesting the Kapiti Hurdles at Otaki and tho Hunting Song gelding may now require a long spell. Ammon Ra, whoso loss of form has puzzled his connections, is returning to New Zealand, and will leave for ' Sydney this week, says a Melbourne message. The early promise in the jumping role shown by Juggle has not been fulfileld as yet. However, the Joculator mare may improve with experience. Bird Call, a light framed but racy looking mare by Autumn, contested the hurdles on the opening day at Otaki, but she only survived three fences. Judged on her looks, a course of jumping should prove beneficial.

Good things have been expected of Bright Song in the capacity of hurdler for in private fche hno shown speed in her fencing. However, with the colours up she continues to disappoint, just as she did on the flat.

Balloon, who had to bo destroyed on the second day at Otaki, had 21 outings last season for ono win, although ho ran second on four occasions and third four times. He was, nevertheless, quite a useful sort. TigcriAm ran sufficiently well in the hack seven furlongs race oii the opening day at Otaki to indicate that he will play a jiart in the finish of a race in the near future. After being in the rear in tho early stages be finished strongly to take third place. I j. G. Morris had a big innings at tho Otaki meeting for he won for his patron, Mr T. A. Duncan, the sunt of £295. That amount enabled Mr Duncan to head the winnig owners’ list at the fixture. Morris had four riding successes, three of the quartette being from his own stable. Although F. Tilley did not experience quite his usual run of successes, at Otaki, ho nevertheless presented two winners and gained several placed performances for Mr W. McA. Duncan, whoso total stako winning- amounted to £195. B. 11. Morris rode the stable’s two winners, Ruanui and Plateau, while lie was also successful on Royal Routine.

Palm continues to do good service for Mr J. L. McMillan, even if lie has not quite fulfilled tho good things predicted of him when he began his racing career as a member of J. 1\ Coyle’s stable at Awapuni. Changing from the hurdling branch, his win and a third at Otaki brought to his owner the sum of £lO5. His trainer. A. Goodman, of Trentham, led in another winner in Aroma.

Arikira has more than once displayed a reluctance to line up with his field, and he took no part in the big handicap on the opening day at Olaki. He again took his place on tiie second day to prove more amenable, but failed to race prominently. Xo doubt tho ground was not to his liking. If. F. Gray, one of R. E. Hatch’s apprentices who is coining more into the limelight, although hie opportunities have been somewhat limited to date, rode a great race on Full Mark in the Bing Memorial Stakes at Otaki. Tho lad kept to the rails in behind the leaders until right into tho straight when, failing to find ail opening, lie came away to drive his mount through to secure second .money. La Poupeo gives promise of developing good form this season, for the mare was

1 finishing very fast in the Waitawa Handicap on the opening day at Otaki. Inability to begin smartly found her badly placed and it cost her further ground when her rider set out to work free. The second day saw her again in the roar, and it was then that she suffered her fall. It will be unfortunate for her connections if the fall leaves any effects. There "was rather an association of circumstances surrounding two of tho candidates in tho Kapiti Hack Hurdles on the opening day at Otaki. Although differing in breeding, both were chestnuts, while each looked very rough in the coat. They remained in tho bird cage till after the other candidates had completed their preliminaries, but in tho actual race their association was broken, for the one was in the lead when ho fell, whilo tho other was foiling along in the rear. Gambler was the former and Miss Energetic the latter, and tho owner of the Roosevelt mare had tho satisfaction of seeing her complete the courso at least. To complete tho chapter, both were absentees on the second day. AIR SAMSON’S JUVENILES. Results of tho two-year-old events at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s mooting seemed to emphasise tho ill-luck of tho injury which Mr J. M. Samson’s two-your-old Garter King received on his voyago to Australia, comments the Christchurch Star. Ho had been tried out to bo definitely superior at this stage of their careers to his stable-mates Guarantee and Southdown, who won the McLean Stakos and Dominion Handicap at Wingatui. At tho same time, Christchurch visitors formod a strong opinion about the po-sibilities of Southdown when lie has a little more ago and cxpreicnce. His win ( would be of interest to Sydney as ltd repro- i sents an early success for a young sire in tho Roiisondalo hors a Rampion, who woo an extra good racehorso himself, Southdown cost Mr Samson 200 guineas at the last Sydney yearling sales. Down South, his dam, was by Wallace (eon of Carbine) from Australia by Gossom (son of Galopin) from Trieete by Chester (ton of Yattendon) from Tempo by Somnus (son of Orest). It is a good Australian winning family whoee members include tho Melbourne Cup winner Revenue, Sydney. Cup winner Moorilla, Victoria Derby winners C'arlita and Frances Tressady, and Caulfield Cup winner Lady Medallist.. Ready Aye Ready, a brother to Down South, was a fine performer. Tho Government analyst has completed his examination of tho swab taken from tho mouth of tho New Zealand rncehorso Autopay, at Randwick, last week. Ho found no sign of a drug. What is boliovod to have been an attempt to dopo Autopay occurred about an hour boforo tho Randwick race meeting was duo to cominonco last Wednesday, a cablegram stated, A short man approached his stable adjoining the course and gave Autopay a thistle, which he munched but eventually spat out. Somo stable boys saw tho incident. They noticed tho man gather up the thistlo, thrust it into his pocket, and hurry away, They pursued and caught him. A violent struggle ensued, and blows were exchanged. Tho man, however, escaped. The police later inado an arrest.
