GOLF

“NEW ZEALAND LADIES’ TITLE.

SEMI-FINALS REACHED. TIMARU, Oct. 11. A further interesting stage was reached in the New. Zealand ladies golf championship to-day. ' Though Mrs Templer, of AVaimate, had been playing steady golf during ■ the tournament, it was expected that Miss M. Stevens, of Pupuke, the vanquisher of Miss Gaisford in the first round, would prove her superior, but Mrs Templer fought the match to the 20th hole, where she won 1 up. Miss Stevens had a lapse from form on the greens, being most inconsistent at critical periods. She holed some magnificent putts, but several times failed when a win appeared a certainty. Mrs Templer (nee Miss Bonnie "Wright) should account for Miss Loughnan in the semi-final' to-morrow, though perhaps it is unwise to predict any result in view of the number of surprises already witnessed. 'Miss Barns-Graham, of Poverty Bay, one of the most promising of the younger players, went down to Miss Loughnan, the match going to the 19th hole. This is the second occasion on which Miss Loughnan has pulled the game out of the fire at the extra hole. SUCCESS OF MRS COLLINSON. ’ Miss M. Tizard (Timaru), who is playing for the first time in championship matches, put up a good fight against Mrs H. Collinson. Miss Tizard was champion of the Timaru club two years ago, and held the record of the ® Jinks until Miss. Kay played her great round of 69 last week. Mrs.Collinson was 1 up at the fourth, and increased her lead by laying her opponent a stymie at the fifth. The sixth was halved, and Mrs Collinson, who drove into the rough at the seventh, lost the hole. The next three holes were halved. At the eleventh Mrs Collinson’s tee shot was bunkered, but she cut out to within four inches of the pin and won the hole. Miss Tizard squared the match at the thirteenth, only to duff her drive at tile fourteenth, and lost the hole. The next two holes were halved. At the seventeenth Miss Tizard approached too strongly, giving her opponent the hole and the match. MISS WATSON AND MISS RUTHERFORD. -

In her match against Miss Rutherford, Miss S. Watson did not piay the wonderfully accurate golf by wlncii she beat Miss Beadel yesterday on the eighteenth green. After winning the first ho.e with a neatly played 4 she halved the next three holes. Miss Rutherford squared the match at the seventh and won the eighth, where Miss Watson, who yesterday could not make a mistake on the green, took three putts. The ninth was halved, and Miss Rutherford sank a long putt to win the tenth. After halving the eleventh Miss Rutherford, who played her second shot badly, sank a 15-foot putt to win the twelfth. The thirteenth was halved, and at the fourteenth (210 yards) Miss Rutherford drove almost to the green, approached dead, and with one putt won the hole in a birdie 3, being 4 up. The North Canterbury player had only to halve the next hole to win the match. DONNELLY CUP.

The greens had dried out well after Monday’s soaking rain and j>layed excellently. Giving a stylish exhibition. Mrs J. C. Templer (Waimate) heavily defeated Miss H. Louglina.n (Christchurch) 6 and 5. She took the first four holes in a brilliant manner. This affected Miss Loughnan who fell into errors. Mrs Templer continued well and was seven up at the turn. The game ended at the thirteenth. A keen struggle was provided by Miss B. Rutherford (Hawarden) ana Mrs il. Collinson (Manawatu), the former winning 1 up. The issue was in doubt till the last green where putting lapses by the Manawatu player gave her opponent the victory.
