ECONOMY IN EXPENDITURE.

approval of report. WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. Unanimous approval was accorded the report of tire National Expenditure Commission at a meeting yesterday of the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce,, and it was decided to write to the Prime Minister urging him to embody the recommendations in legislation for the current session. “The Report reveals how seriously State expenditure is out of adjustment with the fallen national income, and it points out clearly the directions in which that expenditure must bo scaled down to the reduced resources of the country,” says a statement by the executive in support. “Not only the itemised departmental and other economies proposed, but also the complete changes in State policy recommended in connection with the Public Works Department, hospital and other systems, are essential to economio reconstruction, and should be put into effect without delay. The only alternative to economy in State expenditure is increased taxation. Trade, industry, and commerce cannot carry any further taxes, and, as a matter of national urgency, should be relieved of existing taxation at the earliest passible opportunity, in order to facilitate national recovery.”
