THE UNEMPLOYMENT ACT, 1930 Unemployment Relief Taxation WARNING To Taxpayers and Employers THE GENERAL UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY of £1 per annum is, with a few exceptions, payable by all male persons of twenty years of age and upwards. THE EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT CHARGE of one penny in every one shilling and eightpence of salary, wages, or other income is, with some minor exceptions, payable by all persons in the Dominion. THE PRINCIPAL EXCEPTIONS ARE (in the case of wages) persons under sixteen years of age and women wd gins in private domestic service, and (in the case of income other than salary or wages), females in receipt of less than. £2O per annum, and those males for whom legislation provides total exemption from payment of the General Unemployment Levy. Generally, the exemptions which apply in the case of ordinary tax on incomes do not apply in the case of the unemployment tax on incomes. HOW PAYMENT MUST BE MADE: The charge on salary or wages is deductible and payable by the employer, and the charge on income other than salary or wages is required to be paid by the recipient on a declaration to be made to the Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, or to the Commissioner of Taxes. PENALTIES SUBSTANTIAL PENALTIES are provided for failure to comply with the requirements of unemployment legislation, and inspectors have been appointed with power to conduct investigation necessary to ascertain whether or not the law has been complied with. Those liable for the tax are hereby warned that legal proceedings will be taken in cases where it is found that evasion has occurred.
