STEADY RAIN

DANGER OF FLOODING IN HAWKE’S BAY. HASTINGS, Sept. 28. Rain which has been falling more or less unbrokeniy since last Friday week increased in intensity yesterday morning, and throughout the remainder of yesterday, last night and to-day. Reports received from various country districts state that so far no concern is felt, but that the fall has now reached a stage where a continuance of wet weather may turn good into harm. Since about eight o’clock this morning the Tula Tuki, which previously had shown little change, began to rise and has risen rapidly and steadily throughout the day. The Ngaruroro River is running fairly high and the mouth is very poor and partially blocked, consequently there is a fair amount of flooding. At Waitangi the water lias encroached over the roadway between the bridge and the first crossing. Railway buses are getting through in spite of the fact that there are some 18 inches of water across the road. . , Flood conditions developed in the Tutaekuri River this morning, and this a.fternoon the flood waters in the reaches of the overflow' channel reached a high level. Approximately the whole of the lower portion of the Richmond block lying opposite Napier South was covered with water. In the Waitangi district practically the whole country extending from the lower Awatoto Road across to the Farndon raibvay station was under water, and over the greater portion of the area only the tops of fence-posts could be seen for more than a quarter of a mile on the Clive side of the Waitangi bridge. The road was submerged in places to a depth of about 1® inches, which is most unusual. The water lias continued to rise quickly since early this morning. A large gang of men were employed making a cut through the beach to give the river relief.
