STRANGE SCENE.
INCIDENT IN HAWKE’S BAY FLOOD. Per Press Association. NAPIER, Sept. 29. Owing to the mouth of the Ngaruroro River becoming blocked, yesterday’s fresh in that river was unable to reach the sea and backed up the overflow channel of the Tutaekuri River, presenting the strange spectacle of water flowing inland from one river mi the course of a neighbouring stream. Some of the water covered neighbouring low areas and the main south road was blocked for a few hours to light traffic.
The river mouth opened by 4 p.m. yesterday and the water rapidly receded, the road being open to-day. This morning the Tutaekuri overflowed at Meeanee and the farms of Messrs Dooney Bros, were flooded. No damage is reported. It was fortunate that most of the water found a temporary resting place in the Puninga swamp, where the silt was dropped. The Hawke’s Bay River Board’s scheme is to flood this area as often as possible with the object of reclaiming some thousands of acres by siltation.
