The 4000 British winegrowers in Australia purchased each year in the period 1927-30 British goods valued at £8 a head. The corresponding figure for Portugal was 10s 6d a head.' These figures are quoted by Mr S. M. Bruce in reply to Air Ernest Cockburn, who wrote to the British newspapers in support of the Portuguese wine trade. . Air Bruce points out that the British Board of Trade returns show that British exports to Australia in the years 1927-30 amounted to £202,746,000 while to Portugal and her colonies the'total was £32,886,000. Therefore it could not possible be claimed that Portugal’s trade compared with Australia’s. In regard to Air Cockburn $ reference to British capital invested in the Portuguese wine trade. Air Bruce said there was £20,000,000 of British capital invested in Australian wine-grow-ing, a large proportion of which was held in Britain.
