BRAVE MAN’S ACT.
GOA T ERNMFNT REWARDS AVOItKER. OAMARU, Oct. 27. The gallant and courageous act of Mr J. L. Johnston in saving one of his fellow-workers from drowning in the AVaitaki River last month has been rewarded by the Public AA 7 orks Department in the sliapo of a cheque, which was publicly presented to the rescuer at the AVaitaki hydro-electric works by Mr R. H. Packwood, engineer-in-charge. , AVhen the leading carpenter employed at the works tell into the river, Mr Johnston plunged into the water, swam strongly for several hundreds of yards, caught the man and held him until help arrived. The water at the time registered three degrees above freezing point, and the current was extremely swift. Mr Packwood conveyed to Mr Johnston the keen appreciation of the department.
