REFEREE’S EXPERIENCE.
INTERLUDE AT WRESTLING ROUT.
Per Press Association
CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 27. An amusing interlude occurred, during an amateur wrestling bout in the Civic Theatre in connection with the “Come to Christchurch” festivities. Tackied by -two wrestlers, J. Musson and J. Shaw, in the ring, Mr MacDonald Smith, the referee, had an experience that no other wrestling reicree has had in New Zealand. Mr Smith, immaculate in a welltailored dinner jacket, announced an exhibition bout to entertain the crowd. “I’ll bo the referee for this one,” he said, and without more ado the wrestlers went to work. Suddenly thero was a lively and unexpected. development. While the selfappointed referee was lean mg over the nopes in one corner of the ring and talking to another official, Shaw clapped a Deadlock on Musson and hurled him at the referee, who was brought down in a heap. The two wrestlers then set upon the surprised official, and for a few minutes took turns in testing his powers of resistance. Under the strain of various wrestling holds, all in a flash he was bounced, bumped, tossed and dumped, and was completely at the mercy of the wrestlers. It was a very bedraggled but smiling referee who left the ring. He had taken the ordeal in good part.
