OPENING OF SEASON.

TAKARO BOWLING CLUB. VISITING PLAYERS PRESENT. The official opening of the Takaro Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club’s season took place this afternoon, when there was a good representation of visitors from other- clubs. The grounds were gaily decorated with bunting and the greens were in good order. During the afternoon bowling, tennis and croquet competitions were conducted. The weather- was dull and threatening, with a rather strong wind, but fortunately the rain held off. Bowling rinks were present from the Palmerston North, Manawatu, Foxton, Northern, Terrace End, Pahiatua, and Shannon Clubs.

The president (Mr A. Cooksley) expressed his pleasure at welcoming visitors to the 10th opening of the club’s season, and expressed the hope that it would be a successful one. He apologised for the absence of the president of the Manawatu Centre (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.), who was detained by Parliamentary duties in Wellington, Mr H. B. Free (a past president of the club), and Mr A. F. Wimsett (lion, secretary for the centre) who is confined to his home with illness. The president expressed appreciation of the excellent support given the club by the City, Council’s reserves committee and the curator (Mr P. Black). The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) said it was regrettable that the weather had not been kinder, but lie thought all would enjoy their respective games. He stated that the economic outlook was much brighter than it had been for some time past, but the business position was somewhat analogous to that of the ancient Greek who was condemned ever to roll a stone up a hill after it had rolled down again. Things looked to be on the upward curve again and he hoped that movement would be maintained until all the unemployed were absorbed again. He congratulated the Takaro Club on the efficiency of both its past and present committees, whom he commended for their energy and enteiprise. He also referred to the good work done for the district by the Takaro Progressive Association. He stated that the club had done splendid work in laying out its grounds, but all were indebted to the foresight shown by early councillors in establishing so many fine reserves in Palmerston North.' The Mayor then officially declared the club's season open. Mrs Cooksley was called upon to throw the first jack. A delightful afternoon tea was serv- , ed to players and visitors.
