RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) A final reminder is given owners and trainers that acceptances for all events on the opening day of the Otaki meeting close on Friday night at eight o’clock. The two-year-old sister to Fink Note has been named Juno the Third. She is stated to ho displaying a good deal of,dash in her work in the far couth.

Mr h. G. Hill, secretary of the Dunedin Jockey Club, will act as stipendiary steward at the Kurow mooting. Ho will probably act in the samo capacity at other minor meetings. Southern reports state that Lord Argosy is freshening ■ up again. Ho has built up on the easy tasks lie is being allotted. His stable companion, Colonel Cygnuc, was sore when racing at Geraldine. Two of the most forward-looking two-3’car-olds in the lower end of the South Island are said to bo the Rampion colt Southdown and the Paper Money colt Guarantee, both of whom belong to Mr J. M. Samson. Glcnvanc’s record is now throe starts for as many wins. However, at Wanganui on Saturday, the Weathcryane gelding experienced difficulty in holding off Gay Court despite the fact that he had an advantage of 91bs in the weights. > ; In India last season twenty-five horses won more than £ISOO in 'stakes. a little over two months Captain Elgee’s lei

Asur, by Allcnby, bus won £11,780 in prize money.

Mr W. H. Ballinger’s two representatives, Purso nnd Flower, who are at present fulfilling engagements in the south, both shaped well at Orari on Saturday, and they should contribute further towards the cost of tho tour.

Worship, a winner on the opening day of the Orari fixture, is a three-year-old halfbrother by Pombal to Episode, Honour and Courtesy, and is evicdntly endowed with tho family speed. He cost his owner-trainer 275gns n« a yearling. Several years ago Mr Lanco Barker, an English amateur rider, lost tho sight of both eyes through a horec rolling on him in a steeplechase fall. Despite tho handicap, ho has made a success of a small stud farm in Yorkshire. Park Acre, who is trained at Ashhurst, has been accorded a nomination for two events at tho Napier Park meeting. While ho has been an indifferent performer in his racing to dato, Park Aero displayed improvement at his last start by running second to Riotous over a mile at tho Manawatu moetifig this month. Fair Weather, who displayed great promiso as a two-year-old when ho won the McLean Stakes, the Dunedin and Juvenile Handicaps and tho Champagne Stakes in the south, could win but ono open sprint as a three-year-old. However, ho is reported to bo doing well in his work and ho should secure some 6takc money this season.

Don Jose, after finishing last in the Geraldine Cup on Thursday, went fairly close to scoring a surprise win in the President’s Handicap at Orari on Saturday. Bv Archery from the Stewards’ Handicap winner of 1918, Michacla, Don Joso has undoubted galloping ability, but he has not won a race since ho was successful in the C.J.C. Epsom Handicap in 1930. Renewal of the Agua Calicnto Handicap for 1933, with an added money valuo of 50,000 dollars, was announced recently by the president of the Agua Calicnto Jockey Club. The distance remains as in the 13 previous runnings of tho famous event one mile and a quarter —while tho valuo gives it first place in turfdom among the rich stakes offered for all-aged horses. Judged by his two races at the Geraldine meeting, the Some Boy II gelding Some Good has gained some stamina with age and racing experience, states the Christchurch Star. He was second over seven furlongs on tho first day, while in the six furlong Gladstone Handicap on Saturday he held Metal Bird well to score tho only fair margin win of the afternoon. The team of the Riccarton trainer F. D. Jones will bo strengthened shortly by the arrival of the a two-year-old colt, owned by Mr G. Gould. He is by Jericho from Luminant, by Thurnham, from Sunglow, a sister to Bonifonn, by Multiform from Otterdcn. Jericho, by Archery frorn the Martian inare Judith, the dam of Palestrina, has grown into a handsome horse, who might make a very successful sire if given a fair chance.

DIFFERENCE IN WEIGHTS. AWAPUNI HORSE HIGHLY ASSESSED. In being required to give Right Bower 21bs in the Trial Handicap at the Napier Park meeting, Hunter’s Moon, who is now an inmate of Mrs McDonald s stable at Awapuni, appears to have been very highly assessed by the handienpper Hunter’s Moon, who is a three-year-old, has had but the ono start—at the winter meeting of tho Gisborne Racing Club for a win, whereas Right Bower, who is now a six-year-old, won the maiden event at Dannevirke last March and ran second to Alpinist at Waipukurau in tho same month, such good hacks as Sabatini, Interlocutor and False Scent being unplaced. At tho Egmont meeting in May Right Bower ran second to that speedy sprinter Tho Tiger, and later in the day captured tho Shorts Handicap. This month he entered upon tho new season by winning the Ivarero Hack Handicap at tho Manawatu meeting, so from the point of view of performances the Awapuni representative appears to have been harshly treated. Hunter’s Moon also figures in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap wherein she only receives 101 bs from .Foreign Queen, who wound up tho old season with four successive wins in good company. LUCK IN SELECTION.

BUYING OF YEARLINGS. The selection of the best in a draft of yearlings is regarded as a great lottery, and the story attached to Poitrel, the son of St. Alwyne and Poinard, can be cited as a case in point. When submitted to auction us a yearling he failed to realise the moderate reserve of 300 guineas and was thus left on the hands of his breeders to reap a golden harvest. A little story which tho Randwick trainer Frank McGrath tells against himself is worth repeating just as an illustration of how difficult it is to pick embryo champions on appearance and breeding when yearlings, says “Musket,” in the Sydney Mail. The day following the sales a West Australian sportsman arrived in Sydney and expressed his disappointment to Frank McGrath at not being there earlier, as he was anxious to buy a yearling or two. “Well, there are two of the Moses draft still at the stables—a brown colt and a chestnut,” said Frank. “Come over with me and have a look at them.” When they reached the stables the pedigrees of both were studied, and, as the brown was the bigger colt and came from a better winning family on the dam’s side, Frank advised his friend to buy tho brown, who was subsequently named Amazonia and won a race at three years, none at four, one at five, ono at six, and two at seven, the last being a maiden hurdle race. The discarded chestnut (Poitrel) was left on his breeders’ hands and for them he won 15 races, two dead-heats, three seconds, three thirds, and £26,920 in prize-money. Such is the luck of buying yearlings. Poitrel won the Melbourne Cup, carrying 10.0, and he had tho distinction of defeating two champions, Desert Gold and Gloaming, at weight-for-age over a mile and a half.
