FREE AMBULANCE SERVICE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In your esteemed issue of September 23 you published over the nom-de-plume of “Citizen” one of the most glowing tributes I have ever read of a living individual, purporting to emanate from the pen of another. It seemed to me too fulsome and written with an object. If "the person named was nearly worthy of such eulogy, ho was worthy of all and any support in his objective, which is understood by that eulogy to be the unselfish effort to establish a most charitable public service. As this charity is a matter of public interest, being dependant upon public support, I asked “Citizen” to answer two important questions via the medium of your esteemed publication. Question No. 1 is: “Does a committee control the service?” Question No. 2 is: “Does Mr Holz receive any remuneration for his services?” “Citizen” has not replied to my letter, but in your issue of the 27th Mr Holz has vouchsafed the information that there is a committee which controls the service, which completely answers question No. 1 in a perfectly satisfactory manner. Question No. 2 anent the remuneration is replied to by referring the writer to Mr E. P. Jennings (lion, auditor). "Why do this? Surely. Mr Holz knows whether he receives remuneration or not, and why shouldn’t he acknowledge it? The labourer is worthy of his hire, though it might reduce tire brightness of the halo. As this is a public charitable service dependent for its future maintenance upon the goodwill of the public, it is only right and proper that a periodical statement of income and detailed expenditure should be published in the Press with the number of cases attended to during the period covered by such statement. If such statement has previously appeared, I regret that it has not come under my notice, and I await with interest the opportunity to peruse such statement. —I am, etc., ANOTHER CITIZEN.
