POLITICAL SPLIT.

IDEA SCOUTED GOVERNMENT NOT IMPERILLED^ (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. Experienced back-benchers in the Coalition Party scout the idea that the development of a real cave within the Government’s ranks is a possibility this session. The view generally held is that, while there may be one or two members who find themselves forced into a position of independence or of open defiance with the Cabinet policy, there would not be a sufficient number of recalcitrants to make a serious breakaway movement feasible. Discussing the outlook to-night, one prominent Coalitionist who has not always followed his party into the lobby said that, as far as he could see, the life of the Government for the full term was not likely to be imperilled now that the need for the passage of emergency legislation had passed. No doubt there would be the usual differences of opinion—that happened in the best regulated families —but he felt the Govenment would be assured of a substantial majority, on all its legislation.

Another member said it was absurd to talk of breakaway movements. With some supporters who found themselves at variance with the Government policy it was a case of being''“all there for the hundred yards.” In the lobbies there would be talk of a rebellion, but when it came to the vote —the acid test —the promised support was not forthcoming.

The attitude adopted by Mr A. M. Samuel has aroused unusual interest in political circles and the next move —if there is to be one —is being awaited with interest.

Mr Forbes has declined to reply to the latest statement by the member for Thames and it is assumed that the subject will next be heard of in the House when Mr Samuel speaks oa the Address-in-Reply.
