HOCKEY NOTES

(By “Tich.”) Owing to the representations of the “old-timers,” the original intention of playing the “old-timers” against the present players is to be curried on. The Married v. Singlo match is, therefore, postponed. . The following are the “old-timers teams: A team (colours green and white). Goal, F. Cousins; lull-backs, A. Kerslake, W. Skinner; halves, E. Watson, D. Wilton, J. Cousins; forwards, J. V. Kyle, C. Dixon, \V. Crump, K. L. C. Aitchison, W. Wilson. B team (C. 0.8. jerseys).—Goal, L. Martin; full-backs-, H. Bennett, J. Grant; halves, F. McLachlan, E. Whitehead, W. Duckworth; forwards, R. Brace, G. Fitt, A. Anderson, it. Cousins, R. Cliffe. Emergencies for both teams: E. Simpson, C. Page, W. lnkpen. Referees:—J. K. Paton, R. Parton, L. Giorgi. Both matches will start at 2.30 p.m. All present players are requested to bring their gear whether they are playing or not as many “old-timers may need fitting out. Wednesday will see the finish of the hockey season and the staging of the “Old Timers” match is creating much enthusiasm. The concert in the e J el Vr ing promises to be a re-union of all the older piayers and will also bring them into closer connection with the present players. , , _ A. Anderson played forward tor C. 0.8. for years and also played tor Manawatu over a long period. A good dashing forward, and a specially good shot from corner hits. Later he has been a successful competitor in motor cycle sports. He also played against the Indian Army Team. H. Bennett was a solid defensive full back, and piayed for C. 0.8. He was in the team which brought the New Zealand shield back to Palmerston North and was also a member ot many successful 5-aside teams. •J. Grant was anotlier full-back who in his prime played solid hockey. H was a hard man to pass and a very powerful hitter. . F. McLachlan has played in many positions in the backs of the Manawatu teams, and was at home in any one of them. He now handles the referee s whistle quite capably. , ~ L Martin was a good back for the Palmerston Club for many years. He is a member of the Manawatu skate hockey team which holds the North Island Skate Hockey Challenge Shield. He helps present players by refereeing. E Whitehead was a member of the Post Office team for a number of years, representing Manawatu in the halt line on a number of occasions. C. Page learned the game with the Y.M.O.A. team and made good progress. He was in the Y.M.C.A. B team which on one occasion defeated C. 5.0.8. and prevented the latter playing off with the Y.M.O.A. A team for the championship. M. N. Wallace was a member of the successful Tech, junior team and later of the Y.M.C.A. team. A good half back, he represented Manawatu m their successful shield match. G. Fitt, a brother of the late J. Fitt, who' was one of Manawatu’s most brilliant forwards, played alongside his brother. He represented Manawatu on several occasions and was a good shot from corner hits. E. Simpson, another member of the Y.M.C.A. team, was a good all round player. He could play equally well in any position. . B. Cousins also played in the Y.M. Club. He helped his club and the game along considerably. R. Brace was an excellent wing forward and represented Manawatu against the All India Team, on which day he played a brilliant game. After a period away from the game he came out to help Kia Ora win the Sealed Handicap competition. He should be the fittest man in the “Old Timers” teams. He is also a cricket enthusiast and is secretary of the Manawatu Cricket Association. W. Duckworth is a hard hitting fullback and lias- represented Manawatu. Like Brace, be came out to help the Kia Ora Club along and strengthened that team considerably.
