Owing to the roughness of the weather causing a scarcity of stock food, an annual cattle fair at Palmerston North had to be postponed for several weeks.
Heavy falls of snow were reported from many parts of New Zealand with heavy motality among lambs at Pahiatua.
Tlie Railway Department had commenced the erection of the new station at Aorangi, where the siding was being converted. Endeavours were to be made to improve the mail service between America and New Zealand. It was stated that nine weeks elapsed before a reply could be obtained to a letter forwarded to New York, but if the vessels waited two days longer at' San Francisco a connection could be made. Extensions were being made to the Government railway workshops and it was hoped to obtain all material from the colony in the future. Tenders were to be called for the building of ten locomotives. As the result of an earthquake a hill near Adelaide was reported to have been raised considerably. It was reported from London that Wray had challenged Towns for the sculling championship of the world to he rowed in England or America. Towns had refused, but he was willing to row anyone on the Parramatta for £SOO a side.
