AUDIT OFFICE’S RULING.

ATTITUDE OF HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD.

In referring to the Audit- Department’s refusal to reconsider its decision to impose the wages tax on all wages and salaries due on, but not- paid prior to, May 1, 1932, Mr J. W. Rutherfurd, a member of the High School Board of Governors, stated at last night’s meeting of that body that, even if there was a technical defect in the Act, he did not think that the department would do anything so crass and idiotic. The speaker quoted the case of an employer in temporary financial difficulties, who had withheld the wages of his employees, adding that he did not think that the Act- could he construed to further penalise the employees. He moved that no notice be taken of the Audit Office’s demand. In the event of the Education Department deducting the amount-, the teacher would have to pay, but- Mr Rutherfurd was of the opinion that the board should take no action meantime. Mr W. R. Birnie seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
