CYCLING ABREAST

COMPLAINTS AGAINST SCHOOL PUPILS.

Tho receipt of a letter at last night’s meeting of the High Schools’ Hoard of Governors from the Manawatu Automobile Association directing attention to tho practice of pupils of secondary schools cycling three or more abreast on tho city streets led to a brief discussion on the matter.

Tho principal of the Girls’ High School (Mrs M. Rhodes) stated that the school’s rule against the practice was rigid. The girls had been repeatedly warned against riding throe or four abreast and the captains, prefects and teachers were all endeavouring to curb the practice. Mr J. W. Rutherfurd stated that he was afraid the practice operated nearly every day, even in Fitzherbort Avenue, and lie had seen a motorist compelled to pull up to avoid coming into collision with a line of cyclists who were occupying the greater portion of the road. The girls were actually breaking a by-law by such riding. Mrs Rhodes assured tho members that further steps would be taken to curb the practice. The Automobile Association was extended a vote of thanks for its kindly interest.
