FAMOUS WAR RELIC.
EMDEN BELL MISSING FROM GARDEN ISLAND.
The bell of the famous German cruiser Emden, which has long been regarded as the most important relic in the collection of the Garden Island Naval Depot, Sydney, is missing. It lias disappeared from the doorway of the main building on the island, and a search has failed to reveal its whereabouts.
The authorities have not yet lost hope that it has merely been “borrowed” (it was bolted to a speciallybuilt mounting), and hesitate to ascribe its disappearance to theft. Apart from its inscription, it is easily identified, as it bears the marks of a hit by a shell from H.M.A.S. Sydney.
