General Hertzog, speaking at the Nationalist Congress, reiterated that the depression had touched bottom. He predicted that Africa would lead tho world in the return to prosperity. Ho emphasised that there would be no leaving the gold standard or devaluation while the Nationalists were in power.
Tiie imports for eight months decreased by £15,000,000 and the exports by £4,000,000, compared with tho same i>eriod in 1931. The Government must .raise a loan in London to meet the bank advances and other commitments overseas. The general revenue and the railways indicate that each will fall short of the estimate by £2,000,000.
