SEVERE IN WAIROA COUNTY
FARMERS SUFFER ACUTELY
Per Press Association. WAIROA, Sept. 16 Tire, earthciuake seemed to affect the district ol” Maruinaru equally as severely as the Wairoa. A six-roomed house was completely liUcd off its blocks and forced into a concertina shape. Other residences in the locality suffered severely, practically every chimney being razed to the ground. Messages from Mangapoito indicate that the farmers are m a had state. The new Nurses’ Home at Wairoa, consisting of 2(5 rooms, and practically ready for the official opening, is badly damaged and, judging from reliable reports received, will not be fit for habitation for a considerable period. This will further add to the hardships experienced by tlie nursing staff who have already spent two winters in touts, due to the fact that the home was completely demolished in the 1931 earthquake. Steady rain lias sot in, making the Conditions very miserable for those [camping outside. As early as 10 a.in., due to the energy of a committee in charge, a start had been made to clear the debris from the Marine Parade.
Reports from other districts are lacking.
Marumaru is 11 miles from Wairoa and seven miles from Frasertown in the Wairoa County.
DAMAGE AT GISBORNE.
r " Per Press Association. GISBORNE, Sept. 16. Messrs Bignell and Holmes and Redstone’s Garages, also Upton’s tyre surgery, sustained some structural damage. The alignment of' the back wall of the Majestic Theatre is affected. The theatre meanwhile will be closed. The Regent Theatre, which suffered in the previous ’quake, this time was not affected.
