GATHERING AT GENEVA
3 P.M. EDITION
DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE
REFUSAL TO CONTEMPLATE
FAILURE
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.)
Received September Hi, 12.10 p.m. RUGBY, Sept. 15. Mr Arthur Hendorson, speaking at a luncheon of tho National Peaco Council, said: “1 cannot bring myself to believe that the statesmen who will assemble at Geneva in the next few days are prepared to take the responsibility of encouraging a competitive race in armaments and the inevitable danger of war arising from the existence of large armies, navies and air forces. The apprehension that exists in no way causes surprise, hut 1 do not fully share the apprehension because 1 am convinced that the failure of this Diarmament Conference would he a veritable disaster in the life of Europe and the world. I refuse to contemplate failure.” Referring to Germany’s equality claim, Mr Henderson said he thought they could go forward with their work next week, feeling that with goodwill and conciliation this incident could lie settled to the advantage, not only of Germany and tho vanquished countries, but to Europe and the world.
