ASHHURST.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, Sept. 13. At the first meeting of tho newly-formed Women’s Institute held in tho Town Hail, the largo attendance of local women, 58 of whom are financial members, promised very well for the future state of the institute. Tho meeting was commenced with the recitation of tho Women’s Creed and the singing of tho “Ode to Friendship.” The chair was occupied by Mrs H. Fenwick, tho president, who expressed her pleasure at the number present and urged that each do her best to keep tho institute a live one. She also welcomed several visitors from Woodville Institute, who had come to assist them in tho first meeting. Tho business of the meeting was then taken, and correspondence read. In order to raise funds, it was decided to hold a combined social nnd card evening on October 7. Tho next meeting of the institute was deferred one day from tho original fixture owing to its coinciding with a meeting of the council of tho Provincial Federation at Woodvillo. Tho roll call, suggestions for demonstrations or lectures at future meetings, was taken. A competition, jumbled names of tilings found in the pantry, proved surprisingly puzzling and was won by Miss K. Borrott. The president then requested the Woodville ladies to take charge of tho meeting. Mrs Nixon, the Woodville president, wished tho Ashhurst institute success and expressed her surprise and delight at seeing so largo an attendance at a first mooting. Sho introduced Mrs Lyall, who gave an interesting demonstration of rug-making, followed by an equally fascinating one on the making of pictures from coloured chocolate wrappings. Mrs Arlidgo gave two amusing recitations. The president then announced the hostesses for the next meeting, Mesdames Bleakley, Borvett, Bristow and Brockie. Afternoon tea was served under the direction of Mesdames Edmond, Morris, Baton nnd Trass, by whom tho hall had been beautifully decorated with spring bulbs and blossoms. A vote of thanks to the Woodvillo ladies was proposed by Mrs Goertz and seconded by Mrs Edmond. Mrs Fenwick thanked the hostesses. Arbor Day was celebrated nt the Ashhurst School to-day. Tho morning session was devoted to a discussion on tho meaning of and necessity for Arbor Day celebrations, after which Mr E. H. Lange, tho agricultural instructor for tho district, gave an inspiring address to tho children on tho mainfold ways in which trees are useful._ Tho afternoon session was spent in proparing a shelter for tho maize section of tho school garden. Tho chairman of the School Committee has received word that Ashhurst is this year to bo tho centre of tho local group of calf-rearing clubs, and a meeting of delegates will presently bo held here.
