DEMOCRATIC STRENGTH.

INDICATIONS IN UNITED STATES

PORTLAND (Maine), Sept. 13. The elections on Monday, in which the Governor and three Congressional representatives were selected, developed entirely unexpected Democratic strength. The incomplete returns indicate that all-four Democratic nominees may be elected, although the closeness of the votes is delaying a decision.

As Maine is nominally overwhelmingly Republican, * the Democratic strength is interpreted as a favourable indication of that party’s chances at tho general elections, being held some six weeks prior to the general elections, tho results are taken as a socalled national barometer.

The Democrats based their campaign largely on tho repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment, while the Republicans were non-committal or “dry.”
