In 1730 a farmer at Croydon, England, boasted of his prowess in throwing the skittle ball. For a wager o.f £so'lie undertook to bowl his favourite skittle ball between his home and London Bridge, a distance of 11 miles, without throwing it more than 500 times. He won the wager, with a total of 445 throws.
