Tho conclusion of the Ottawa Conference marks the end of an important phase in tho reorganisation of interEmpire trado, but the task of putting into effect the Ottawa decisions must involve tho Governments of Britain and tho Dominions in heavy work during tho next few weeks. Meanwhile, the framework of the economic relations within tho Empire having been settled, it has become possible) for the Government in Britain to proceed with its efforts to promote Bnitain’s world trade through negotiations with other Rowers for mutual reduction of tariffs. The Times warmly welcomes the announcement that the Danish Government has made all tho necessary plans to proceed with the discussions for a trade agrement, and the Argentine Ambassador is now on the way back to London, bringing with him concrete proposals for an agreement mutually advantageous to Britain and the Argentine. “Tliero can be no doubt,” the Times adds, “that most countries to whom the British market is important will follow the example of Denmark and Argentina, and show themselves eager to cojne to fair arrangements for the encouragement of mutual trado now that wo are not longer willing to buy freely from those who refuso to buy from us.” Tho Times recalls the efforts in which British Ministers have exhausted themselves at a series of international conferences since the war in the attempt to reduce tho tariff walls until it began to be realised that the greatest service Britain could render to the cause of freer trado was to end a common system of one sided imports.
