BOWLING, CROQUET AND TENNIS

MANAWATU CLUB’S MEETING. The annual meeting of the Alanawatu Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club was held last evening, Mr J. B. Gcrrand presiding ovor a good attendance. There were several apologies for absence. The annual report of the president, also the section reports, as previously published in the “Standard,” and the balance sheet, were adopted. Speaking to the report, Mr Gerrand said that lie had been disappointed at the club’s finanaicl position, caused by the prevailing conditions. Bowling and croquet showed increased membership, but there was a decrease in the tennis section, which had a largo “nominal” membership. Expenses were down £22, however. Serious consideration would have to lie given to the finances by the incoming committee and the members generally. There was a decrease of £39 in revenue, as compared with the previous season, and the increase in the overdraft was £23 14s. There was a decrease of £24 3s fid in subscriptions. Mr D. F. Smillie, the general secretary. reported that there was a total financial membership of 139, comprising 38 croquet players, 26 bowlers, 38 gentlemen and 37 lady tennis players. Comment on the fine efforts of the tea committee was made by Mr Gerrand, who said that they had greatly assisted the funds.

The winner of the bowling pairs competition were Messrs Barnes and Gilbert; in the croquet section Mr and Mrs W. J. Robertson won the open doubles at the Manawatu tournament; not as stated in the annual report. The report was amended in this respect. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr A. E. Messrs Corbridge. Shand and Warwick. Croquet section. —Secretary, Mrs A. Radford; treasurer, Air Robertson; tea committee, Alesdamos Benfell and Glendinning and Aliss Gausted; delegates to association, Mesdames Corbridge and Robertson; green supervisor. Air Robertson. It was decided that the season open on October 1. A discussion was conducted on the improvement of the club’s financial position and it was decided to form a cominitteo comprising Messrs Cutler, Corbridge, Robertson, Grcig, Hunter and Puklowski to consider special ways and means of raising funds. The general committee was empowered to effect reductions in membership fees in cases of hardship. Tt was decided that the general committee give the matter of gala days consideration. A tribute was paid to the good work of Mr Bates, Mr Smillie and Mr Hunter and they were accorded votes of appreciation. The meeting closed with votes of thanks to the chair and the Press.
