Aitcliison presided and extended a cordial welcome to tho visitors, particularly those from other towns, also the young people present and voiced the hope that all would enjoy tho programme provided. \ isitors welcomed were Mesdames Lee (New Plymouth), Blythe (Wangauui), Sherrard (Christchurch), Guy Edwards (Wanganui) and Miss Gallus (Kimbolton). Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames D. Millar, Bowler Watson, J. K. Luton, R. Donald, G. T. Brown, J. B. Gerrand, E. Opio, John Ecubes and Miss McLagan. Mesdames E. Wilson and B. Wingate greeted tho members on arrival, and tho tea hostesses who served a dainty afternoon tea were Mesdames McLeod, Simpson, Mitchell, Valentine, Graham, G. Wilson and Miss Nairn. A particularly line programme had been arranged with musical and elocutionary items, all the performers responding to encores, and a competition added further to tho pleasure. The programme was as follows:—Songs, ‘‘AH Joy Be Thine” and “Wait,” Miss Pollard; musical monologues, “Little Tan Shoes” and “Dorothy Perkins Rose,” Miss C. Reed, a visitor Irom Wellington; songs, “Bird Songs at Eventide” and “The Piper,” Miss Sylvia Morrison; songs, “Coinin’ Thro’ the Rye” and “Passing By,” Mrs H. Dean; guitar solos. Miss Molly Allen; recitations, “Touchin’ Fings” and “James James Morrison Morrison,” Melba Niven. Tho accompaniments were played by Mrs McNeilly, Misses E. Corko and T. Birch.

Mrs Whitehead was the winner of the competition, a consolation prize being awarded to Mrs Leo (New Plymonth). Thanks to the performers, Uio_ hostesses and tea helpers and the ladies who had decorated the hall were conveyed hy acclamation on the motion of Mrs Henderson. The meeting closed with the singing of a hymn. An invitation to an afternoon was extended to members from the Palmerston North branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. WEST END PARTY. SUNDAY SCHOOL CHILDREN. The annual tea party of the West End Sunday School was held in West End School last evening, about SO scholars being present. Alter a delightful tea the rest of the evening >vas happily passed with games and impromptu*items by the children. In addition to present and past teachers there were present Canon G. V. Woodward, Rev. C. E. Hyde and a number of parents and friends. BRIDGE AFTERNOON. Members of the Northern Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club held an enjoyable bridge afternoon on Wednesday when the hostesses were Mesdames Lee, Holmes, Langford and Brown The prize-winners were Mrs Dickel and Mrs H. Garner (lucky number). CROQUET. MAN A WAT U CLUB’S REPORT. The following is the annual report of the croquet section of the Manawatu Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club for submission hy Mesdames H. Sinclair and A. Radtord:—“Although the membership was small, the season was a most enjoyable one._ In the North Island tournament, Mr W. J. Robertson was runner-up in the open doubles. In the Manawatu tournament Mr and Mrs Robertson won the handicap doubles and Mrs Radford was runner-up in the A grade handicap singles. 11l the club competition Airs Spring won the Patterson Rose Bowl, Mrs Radford the AViison Cup and Aliss Gausted the Spinley Mallet. We wish to thank all members who donoted trophies during the year, also the president, Air J. B. Gerrnnd, lor his many courtesies and help. We received a friendly visit from the Wanganui Croquet Club and members of our club visited Dannevirke for friendly games which were much enjoyed.’ BASKETBALL. NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 25. The New Zealand basketball tournament was continued to-day in line weather, and some interesting games were witnessed. Great interest was taken in the meeting of Otago, who defeated Auckland yesterday, and AVelliilgton, the southerners again scoring 1 an°impressive win. Additional results of to-day’s play are as follow: Canterbury 14 v. Southland 12; Otago 15 beat Wellington 10; Auckland 27 beat South Canterbury 4; Ashburton 19 beat Hawke’s Bay 14.
