INTERESTING OLD PAPER.
FIFTY-FOUR YEARS AGO.
An interesting paper in the possession of -Mr I. Rodgers, senr., or Rangitikei Line, Palmerston North, is the issue of tile New Zealand limes of June 5, 1578, and its contents provide their own commentary upon the iite of those times. Incidentally, they serve to emphasise the enormous progress made by the Dominion since then. Passengers by liner packet were counselled to voyage by the barque Chaudiere (470 tons; direct to London, and tire entire bills of lading of incoming vessels were advertised to the public, including ladies' telt costumes, alpaca silks and camel’s hair hats. There was a brewery for sale, and even in those days a fine arts and industrial exhibition was being held, in Wellington. Businesses nowflourishing were in their infancy and others now defunct were in their prime. The Governm< ut township of Carnarvon, situated at the Ferry, on the banks of the Lower llangitikei, was ljeing advertised for settlement as “the port for the thriving and important inland townships of Sanson, Bulls. Marton, Feildmg, Halcombe, Palmerston, Bunnybhorpe and Fitzherbert.” The announcement appeared that 2.T.000 square miles of the Northern Territory of Australia were offered for sale. Purchasers were also sought for two acres near the Post Office and railway station at Dunedin.
