ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A meeting of the Palmerston North sub-committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society was hold last night, when Air E. G. Matthews presided. Others present were Alessrs Priest, Ward, Page, Marshall, Proctor, Jones, W. Hosking, W. H. Hosking, Puklowski, Seaward, Ward, Tliorburn and Elsmoro (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Air J. Penman. Air H. Taylor, a member of the subcommittee, who has removed to Napier, tendered his resignation. Regret was expressed by tho chairman at tho loss the committee had sustained. Three nominations were received to fill the vacancy, Air D. A. Scott being elected. Air L. J. Spring (Foxton) wroto asking if the committee was purchasing shags’ and hawks’ legs.—The secretary said lie had advised the writer that tho committeo was not buying legs. The Wellington Society advised that in future railage would have to be paid on fish cans, and that the charge proposed would bo prohibitive for the carrying out of the work tho society had done in the past. The fish committee had decided that in future distribution must bo done by tho societyls own motor vehicles and staff. The committee had decided that tho yearlings now at the Mastcrton hatcheries lie liberated in nearby streams. It was suggested, however, that some subcommittees might like to do their own carrying in rospect of their allocaThe opinion was expressed that the sub-committee would be unable to send lorries for its quota, but it was thought that the Wellington Society might supply tho Alanawatu with yearlings, in view of the fact that stripping had been done in Alanawatu streams this year for the society. Air E. AVard offered the services of his lorry for running expenses only and tho offer was accepted, provided tho Wellington Society would meet the expenses or railage, whichever was ehoaepr. The chairman laid on the table the estimate of receipts and expenditure for the Wellington Society for the coming year. The receipts wero estimated at £2728 10s Bd, of which amount fishing licensos were set down at £1255, game licenses at £9OO and deer licenses at £133. The heaviest items on tho expenditure side were salnrics £BOI, Alasterton hatcheries £578, purchase of pheasants £275, transport £329, depreciation of cars £l3O and first purchase of birds (March, 1933) £IOO. The total expenditure was £2953 9s 6d, leaving a deficit of £225. The application of the AVairarapa sub-committee for the appointment of another ranger had not been approved owing to the need for strict economy. A recommendation was made that the fish and game committees reduce expenditure by £125 in each case. This was necessary to enable the council to operate within its income.

A recommendation is to be forwarded to the council that Air T. Andrews, the ranger, bo granted a bonus of £lO 10s for his extra work in connection with fish trapping operations. In answer to Air AVard, tho chairman said the Department of Internal Affairs asked for tho recommendations of tho council before framing regulations. Howover, it was decided to write asking when tho Taupo-Rptorua regulations were framed, members expressing tho opinion that the acclimatisation societies should have a voice in all matters upon which it was intended to make Regulations. Air AA r ard also mentioned that in addition to the Taupo license, one was required for tho Rotorua district. Ho was of the opinion that the two qould be combined.
