BRITAIN’S LEADERSHIP.

• HOPE IN TIME OF CRISIS. SPIRIT FOR OTTAWA. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 27. “Just as in the equally grave crisis following the Napoleonic wars it was Britain’s leadership which brought the world out of its- troubles and into an era of unprecedented prosperity, so I believe the British Empire, beginning with the results of tho Ottawa Conference, is onco again going tp lead the nations to a new era of great prosperity,” said Rt. Hon. S. M. Bruce, leader of Australia’s Ottawa delegation, on his arrival to-day. Mr Bruce said the fundamental spirit of the conference must be the desire of each country to assist each other back to prosperity. “It cannot be a bargaining conference, he added. It it is approached on that line it would lead to complete failure. One has the example before him of the whole world ever since the war trying to do that. Every' country has been playing its own hand and been thoroughly selfish until the world has been brought into chaos. I hope, and so do others, that the conference will give the world something in the nature of a lead—that we can face pressing problems in a spirit of self help and co-operation, and that we can get somewhere.
