PRIMARY DIVISION

ST. ANDREW’S GOOD WIN. The St. Androw’s-Athlctio match proved to bo a great struggle which tho Saints won by 5 goals to 4. The greasy ground mado accuracy diffioult, but good entertainment was forthcoming, each team giving a good display. Athletic sot tho ball rolling, but Lyons and J. Smillio took control of the leather and led an invasion, but Athletic retaliated and forced tho Saints to concede a cornel*. C'oombs and Oman cleared, however, and Millar carried on tho movement. Athletic wero staunch and there was a battle royal before Athletic’s goal before Young, who took careful aim directly in front of the goal, had his effort well frustrated. Rain was now falling and accentuated tho difficulty of accurato play. Play was of an up and down naturo and tho two goal areas wero invaded freely. Athletic _ were the more consistent and reaped their reward at last when Atkinson shot neatly after receiving tho leather from Hearsey. Conditions becamo worso and St. Andrew’s attempt to cqualiso by way of J. Smillio .did not succeed. From a throw-ill the leather wont out to Watt who indulged in a solo battle with Oman to add to Athletic’s score after a splendid dash. St. Andrew’s retained control of tho ball and played determined football. The Athletic backs wero hemmed in securely and, receiving good support, Young, netted a fine goal. Despite a heavy ball tending to cramp their stylo, tho opposing forwards indulged in fast football. Tho Saints pressed to effect and a powerful shot from Lock was well stopped by Reid. The blacks conceded a corner and, when the leather robounded, Young shot hard to make tho scores equal. St. Andrew’s were making the pace at this stage and Lyons put in several fruitless dashes. It appeared that persistency would bo rewarded when, with tho majority of tho Athletic players floundering in tho mud tho leather went to D. Smillio. However, with only a fow yards between him and tho goal, ho missed tho opening. Reid was severely tested during tho ensuing period and saved his goal splendidly on several occasions. Thero was no further scoring before half-time, however. SECOND HALF. Thero was no interval and on tho resumption of play tactics of a similar nature to those earlier in tho game were employed. St. Andrew’s dominated play, but the passing was weak. For a timo thero was little of an exciting nature, players finding it difficult to retain a footing and get in a shot. St. Andrew’s penned in Athletio and wero awarded a penalty which was well saved by Reid. D. Smillio gathered up tho ball and goalcd with a hard shot, but was ruled off side. St. Andrew’s wero pressing consistently and troubled tho goalkeeper to a great extent, and he was finally beaten when Young sent in a low shot after a desperato battle with the opposition. Tho second half had now advanced 25 minutes and open play provided good entertainment. Tho pace becamo willing and when Athletic broko clear there was a mud-scratnblo before the Saints’ goal but a clearance was eventually effected. Tho Saints played hard and overcame tlio Athletic backs to allow D. Smillio to penotrato and shoot nicely. Within fivo minutes of time Athletic infused greater energy into their tactics, but failed to mako much impression on the Saints’ backs. Askam secured the leather from a scramblo and essayed a long shot which beat tho goalkeeper after curling in. Darkness was now falling rapidly and mado accurato shooting difficult, but tho pace was willing. 'Time sounded with the scoro unchanged. Rev. C. S. Matthows refereed. R.S.A. BEAT FEILDING. Occupying No. 2 ground, R.S.A. scored a decisive win over Foilding by 7 goals to 2. The visitors founa difficulty in fielding a full team, but put up a good display. At half-time R.S.A. led 4—l, Cornell (2), Baigont and Morgan Bcoring for them and Fordyce for Foilding. After tho changc-ovor Wagstaff, Baigcnt and Morgan added to tho ox-soldiers’ score and Lagg for Foilding, Mr A. G. Baldwin roferecd.
