A London message stated that Rt. Hon. Richard Seddon, Prime Ministor of New; Zealand, had suggested the advisability of subsidising vessels flying the British flag and conveying British goods.
Boxerism was reported to he again spreading in China.' An extraordinary message from London stated that the Coronation ceremony had been postponed owing to tho illness of King Edward, who had been operated on for appendicitis and was progressing satisfactorily. The first section of the East Coast railway was opened at Gisborne. Satisfied that the Makerua swamp could be readily drained and a large amount of flax made available, a Wellington syndicate completed the purchase of that area for £30,000 cash from the Manawatu Railway Company. It was proposed to dredge the Tokomaru River and put in subsidiary drhins.
