POULTRY INDUSTRY.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In yours of the 21st inst. I noticed a lengthy report on the poultry industry, re having a Bill passed to protect it. Mr Maclean, it says, gave an outline of some of the Bill’s proposals, to the effect that all who supply eggs must register, and those who keep under 100 fowls pay 2s 6d. 12 and under to be exempted. That looks all right, but take a man with this 12’ or under. Say he gets four dozen eggs a week. Tho home consumes a dozen or so. What is ho to do with the balance P Sell them ? Oh no, the grocer cannot buy eggs from you now. Barter them for a loaf of bread? Oh no. he cannot do that now. Now, sir, whom are these men trying to help and protect—the poor man and his family who are doing their best to eke out a living? Oh no. It reminds me of the days that are past when an industrious man on a farm or a section could grow anything ar everything and get rid of what lie did not require at auction, but there was a Bill passed and only those who joined in could sell anything, • and ft will be the same with the eggs if there is a Bill passed to that effect.—l am, etc., ONE OF 12.
