RACING NEWS

GOOD RIDING PERFORMANCE. (By “Binocular.”) The Palmerston North horseman, R. C. Miles, has been enjoying a wonderful innings in the saddle this season, and it has been his good fortunate to win two jumping events in the afternoon in two or more instances. At the Manawatu meeting in April he won the hurdle event each day on Easterly; at Marton ho captured the steeplechase on Pangolin; at Egmont he won the hurdles on Cruachan on the second day and then added the steeplechase later in the afternoon on Nukumai; at Wanganui he again scored on Easterly in tho Century Hurdles; at Hawke’s Bay he won tho steeplechase on Hard Gold, while at Napier Park on Thursday he won tho Petane Hack Steeplechase on Hard Gold and tho Napier Steeplechase on

Pangolin. Fortune appeared to have desert ■; ed him at the winter meeting of tho Auckland Racing Club, where he had a series of falls, without meeting -with serious injury, but it is now that the pendulum is again swinging in his favour. Miles’s association with tho Awapum stable of L, Knapp has been a very happy one, particularly where Pangolin is concerned, for he has piloted tho chestnut gelding to victory on three occasions this season —tho McGuire Steeplechase at Ohinemuri in March, tho Marton Steeplechase in April, and now tho Napier Steeplechase. Strangely enough. Pangolin met with an injury at Marton, although it did not prevent him from winning, even though it kept him inactive for a brief period, and ho was making hie reappearance when he won at Napier Park on Thursday. TO MAKE TRIP.

Mr H. E. Edmunds, owner of Inflation, has been considering sending his two-year-old across the Tasman for tho spring racing and matters wero finalised on Thursday for Alan McDonald to take him. Originally, Mr Edmunds had considered sending Inflation to George Price, but the programme was amended as a result of Alan McDonald expressing his willingness to undertake tho training arrangements. The horseman had remained over in Hawke’s Bay with tho members of tho stable who were going on to Napier Park after tho Hastings fixture, and Mr Edmunds made tho trip through on Thursday to finalise matters. However, as Alan McDonald is desirous of fulfilling his riding engagements at the Wellington meeting, tho trip will not be undertaken till after tho conclusion of that fixture. It will thus be necessary for him to apply for a license in Australia, while arrangements will also have to be made for a pilot. However, _ in tho latter respect there does not promise to be any difficulty, for immediately after the Grand National meeting R. E. Hatch contemplates visiting the “other 6ido” and will be accompanied by the prospective champion for the present season K. Yoitre, who is anxious to ride the Awapuni representative when possible. Prior to leaving for Australia on what has proved to be an extended trip, R. Reed was keen to throw his leg across Inflation in a race, but, owing to H. Gray having first claim, he never realised hie ambition. With Reed still in Sydney, another first class horseman would no doubt be available. . Inflation has to date won £1377 10s in stake money and, with a little better fortune in the running of some of the events ho contested, his record might well have been greater. However, with five victories, his owner has every reason to be optimistic as to the future. In his racing he has always given evidenco of staying-on and as a three-year-old ho should be quite capable of running out longer distances than ho has been required to raoo over to date, particlarly as ho throws back very strongly to Boniform, the sire of his dam. Meantime he has been nominated for the Toorak Handicap (8i furlongs), and the Caulfield Cup (l| miles) at tho Y.A.T.C. meeting in October, the V.It.C. Can tala Stakes (1 mile) and the Melbourne Cup (2 miles), tho A.J.C. Epsom (1 milo). and tho Metropolitan Handicap (1 mile 5 furlongs) at the A.J.C. meeting. However, there js a

fund of other racing available and, provided he is ready, his Australian programme could be entered upon with the Norwich Stakes on August 27, while then follows the Canterbury Park Thrce-Year-Old Handicap (9 furlongs) and the Canterbury Park Stakes (6 furlongs) on September 3. In the same month at the Tatcrsall’s Club meeting there will bo the Chelmsford Stakes (9 furlongs), the Spring Handicap (1£ miles and the Tramway Handicap (7 furlongs), with the A.J.C. meeting following on October 3. On that day tho Kensington Handicap (7 furlongs) is run with tho Craven Plato (li miles) and tho Fribbon Stakes (1' milo), which is restricted to three-year-olds, to follow a week later. Awapuni track watchers aro of tho opinion that the best has not been seen of tho Papor Money colt and that ho will go on to still greater heights.

GREAT NORTHERN HURDLE RACE.

Per Press Associaion. AUCKLAND, Juno 24.

In the Great Northern Hurdle race run at Ellerslio on Juno 3, J. J. Corry’s Landmark and Make Up finished first and socond, and E. and N. Foreman’s Full Mark third. A protest has now boon received by the Auckland Racing Club against Mr Corry’s horses being allowed to run m tho race. A Supreme Court action was brought by Mr Corry in rogard to the ownership of Croupier, who raced in his colours ( last season, but in August last a partnership was registered in Croupier between Mr Corry and John and James Patterson, of Auckland. Mr Justice Hordman found that tho horse was owned by the Pattersons, and it 13 in consequence of this. judgment that Messrs Foreman are appealing. They wish to test tho eligibility of Mr Corry’s horses to take part in the Groat Northern Hurdlo race. _ , In view of tho Supreme Court action, tho stakes have beon paid out to Mr Corry, but the Auckland Racing Club will consider the protest shortly.
