SCHOOL MAINTENANCE.
REDUCTION IN ALLOCATION. “With reference to your letter intimating that Cabinet has decided to reduce by £20,000 tho grant for maintenance of primary school buildings, and that the money available will probably be allocated for the various districts on the basis of estimated requirements, I am directed to say that in tho opinion of the board the proposed allocation is impracticable,” stated a letter which has been forwarded to the Director of Education by the Wanganui Education Board. Opinions expressed at yesterday’s board meeting were that the board which produced the largest list of “urgent works” -would secure tho greatest share of the funds. “The board suggests that a much more satisfactory method would be to make a proportionate reduction in the grant for each district and to advise each board of the amount allocated for the year. The boards would then know exactly what money would Be availabla for maintenance works and would shape their course accordingly. “This board realises that such a large reduction in the grant will mean that it will be able to carry out only those works which are of a necessitous nature and that much expenditure which would in the ordinary course have been incurred, will have to be avoided.”
