Approximately one million cases of New Zealand manufacture have been used by Nelson fruitgrowers this season.

He' enlisted , from Methven and on his return to New Zealand he went to the West Coast. Apparently, no one told him that he was entitled to a war gratuity and until a few days ago ho was ignorant -of the fact that a certain sum of money was due to him. He has now made an application through the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association for the gratuity.

There are now over eleven hundred railway stations along the lines in New Zealand, or an average of one for every three miles of track. Of these, nearly 300 are offioered.

The. first term for primary and secondary schools' in Palmerston North concluded yesterday and fifter the customary autumn vacation, they will resume on May 23.

The re-appointment of the sitting members of the Prisons Board has been announced in a Gazette. The sitting members are: Mr Justice Reed (chairman), Mrs I. Frier, Dr. McEvedy, Dr. McGavin, Messrs John Alexander and B. L. Dallard.

Discharges in bankruptcy were granted by His Honour Mr Justice Reed in the Supremo 001114; to-day on the application of Mr Grant to Arthur Funston, a carrier, of Colyton, and Jonas Alonzo Kingsbeer, a coachbuilder, of Palmerston North.

Members of the Manawatu Drainage Board, under the direction of tho chairman, Mr D. Prouse, and the engineer, Mr A. H. M. Wright, yesterday inspected the lower area of the board’s district. A report of the inspector will bo made at tho next meeting of the board. Burglars broke into the house of Mr Leon de Mauny and Madame de Mauny, two well-known Wellington musicians, of Oriental Parade, while they were attending tho Symphony Orchestra’s concert at the Town Hall on Thursdav evening. Jewellery valued at about £4O and £lO in notes and postal notes were stolen.

Petitions have been presented to Parliament bearing 12,298 signatures claiming that the present cost of school text books is unduly high and imposes a heavy burden on tho parents of scholars. Tho petitioners urge that the books should be produced and distributed under a system of open tender, in which case they claim that a saving of 33 1-3 per cent, could be made. At tho meeting of the ManawatuOroua branch of the New Zealand branch of the N.Z. Pig Breeders’ Association to-day, Mr M. E. Knudsen said that the time had arrived when the Massey College authorities should submit a report on the pig breeding done there. The industry was coming to the front now, said Mr Knudsen, and it was the opportunity for the college to show the progress made by it in this branch of its work, for it had made excellent progress so far as dairy farmers were concerned. It was decided to notify the college that the branch was concerned at the lack of information and would appreciate reports. Decorations of the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of which His Majesty the King is Sovereign Head and Patron, were presented by His Excellency the Governor-General at Government House, Wellington, yesterday. Lord Bledisloe acted on behalf of H.R.H. tho Duke of Connaught, Grand Prior and Chapter General of the order. The recipients of the honours •were Mr F. W. Ward (serving brother) with 18i years’ service and Mrs Elizabeth M. Osborn (serving sister) with 30 years’ service. In addition, a decoration was presented to Mrs A. M. Johnson as next-of-kin of the late Mrs S. D. Tripe (serving sister) who was one of the foundation members of the District Nursing Guild of St. John and vice-president for many years, and was at the time of her death the honorary life president of the guild.
