RUGBY CONTROL

NEW SEASON’S COMPETITIONS. FORTY-TWO TEAMS ENTERED. The first meeting of the newly formed management committee of tho Manawatu Rugby District Council was held last night, when the president, Mr J: A. Colquohoun, occupied the chair. Others present were Messrs F. Mackie, K. W. Eglinton, T. Pagan," H. R. Crawford, M. Bowler, E. Clevely, H. Hands, N. Penny, J. It. Hurdie, L. F. Berry, C. Yates, A. W. Thompson and T. Mcl^erron. The chairman expressed pleasure at tlu) return to office of so many of last year’s members and extended a welcome to the new members'. The Bunnythorpe Club asked whether its junior team could bo granted two home games at the opening of the season.—Hereferred to the fixtures’ committee for its consideration. The Y.M.C.Ai Club made an application for tho regrading of A. Stopfort from senior to junior grade, the club having decided to enter a team in the junior grade.—The chairman mentioned that he had been given to understand that Stopfort had played in the Carterton seniors. Mr Crawford moved that tho application be granted, pointing out that the player would probably be of great use to the young club. Mr McHerron voiced a protest, stating that there were senior teams looking for players. However, the motion was carried.

The Feilding Football Executive made application for the erection of a shelter at Johnston Park for the man in charge of the score board. The executive would be prepared to find the labour providing tho council found the material, the estimated cost to be £2 10s.—It was the opinion of Mr Crawford that the executive might well meet the expenditure from the funds it was accumulating, being supported in his contention by Mr Hands. Mr Penny pointed out that under the agreement tho council was responsible for the ground arrangements and the executive for tho stand. The chairman stated that he considered the council should supply the shelter. Mr Bowler mentioned that the scoreboard keeper did his work voluntary and was fully exposed to the weather. When put to the meeting a motion that the cost be borne by the council was carried without dissent.,

Tho Palmerston North Primary Schools’ Association advised that Mr Berry had been appointed the association’s representative on the council. —Received.

The Batteries Club made an application for affiliation and entered a team in the junior grade. The club’s colours would be red and navy blue jerseys, black shorts and red topped stockings. An application was also made for the regrading of J. P. Joyce (Alhambra, Dunedin, 1924) and G. V. B. Ensor (H. 5.0.8., Napier. 1927) irom senior to junior grade.—All three applications were agreed to. The allocation of the gymnasium for practice nights resulted: Tuesday, Old Boys; Wednesday, United; Thursday, Kia Toa; Friday, St. Patrick’s. Kia Toa and United both applied for Thursday, the issue being determined by the toss of the coin.

The following fixtures committee was set up: Messrs J. A. Colquhoun and P. 0. Skoglund. Tho appointment of a sole selector was held over.

It was decided to hold the customary seven-aside tourney on June 3, it being considered advisable to maintain the date although the day, unfortunately, fell on a Friday. Mr McHerron considered that training facilities should be furnished for players by the installing of lights on one of the Park Road grounds.—Mr; Hardie was deputed to ascertain the cost of installing lighting arrangements to permit of one team practising; at a time. J SHOW FOOTBALL. The chairman reported that the sub- ■ committee had met the A. and P. j Show football committee, when the j position had been discussed. While nothing definite had been arranged, it now appeared from the “Standard”, that the A. and P. Association now | only sought the To Auto-Palmerston j North High School game on the Wed- [ nesday and the North v. South match \ on the Saturday. Mr Pagan pointed j out that it was customary for the j Manawatu-Horowhenua trial game to be played on Show Saturday. The chairman was of the opinion that June j 18 would be too early for a representative match and it would be necessary I to furnish the country players with an j opportunity to gain places in the representative team. It was, however, decided to meet the A. and P. Association, while the sub-unions are to be' advised of the position and requested that the two sub-unions meet before the North v. South game so as to furnish the north selectors with an opportunity to determine the merits of the players at that end of the district. REPRESENTATIVE FIXTURES. Mr White, reporting on his visit to Wellington as delegate to the annual, meeting of tho New Zealand Union, stated that the principal matter of discussion had been the scrum formation and blackboard lectures on tactics by Messrs C. Porter, M. Nicholls and W. Wallace, it had been agreed to play the three men in the front row for the incoming season at least. Some discussion had also surrounded the cost of entertainment for visiting teams. In connection with tho Maori match, it hadj been offered the Manawhenua union for July 9 while there was every indication that it would become a permanent fixture ay Palmerston North. The representative engagements arranged for the season had been, where Manawhenua was concerned:—August 27: v Wairarapa, at Masterton; September 1: v. Taranaki, at Stratford; September 3: v. Wanganui, at Wanganui; September 7: v. Hawke’s Bay, at Palmerston North ; September 17: v. Wellington, at Palmerston North. SCRUM FORMATION. It was decided to forward a recommendation to the clubs that threo men be played in the front row of the scrum. Mr Hands: On all occasions, whether the team ‘goes on the field two or more men short? . The chairman: Yes. NOMINATIONS FROM CLUBS. The following nominations of teams were received:Senior Grade.—P.N. Old Boys, Feilding Old Boys, Kia Toa, Feilding, Massey College, United. Six teams in grade. Junior Grade.—Feilding, Feilding Old Boys, Kia Toa, Massey College, Palmerston North Old Boys (two teams). (1), Technical (3), Woodville (2), Palmerston North High School (8). Total teams entered, 42. The cumbersome nature of the junior grade competition with 13 teams therein was commented upon by Mr Clevely, who asked on what principle it would be played. Some discussion surrounded the advisability of dividing the competition into A and B sections, tho six teams considered the strongest to form the A section and the other seven the B section. However, it was decided that the competition be played for one round and that the question of playing a further round if necessary be then considered.
