OBITUARY

DR, H. T. FERRAR. SERVICE FOR THE DOMINION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 19. The death has occurred of Dr. H. T. Fcrrar, of the New Zealand Geological Survey. Dr. Ferrar, who was born in Ireland, spent the early part of his life in South Africa. He was geologist to Captain Scott’s first expedition to Antarctica, where he spent over two years. In 1905 he was appointed to the geological section of the Survey Department in Egypt. At the time of the outbreak of the Great War he was a master at Christ’s College, Christchurch, and joined the Expeditionary Forces, serving in Egypt and Palestine. In 1919 lie joined the staff of the New Zealand Geological Survey. He rendered great service to tho Dominion, particularly in regard to soils.

Tho New Zealand University this year conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Science. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, a member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and a life member of the New Zealand Institute.
