Mr R.. D. McKelvie, a son of Mr J. McKelvie, of Carnarvon, was today welcomed as a new member of the committee of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association.

Rev. J. Ewen Simpson, minister of the Baptist Church, Tauranga, for the past four years, has received a unanimous call to the pastorate of Colombo Street Baptist Church, Christchurch. It is understood the call will be accepted. Messrs Jos Batchelar, M. A. Conway, L. H. Colllinson, J. F. Carter, R. D. Knight, H. Y. Lethbridge, J. Linklater, M.P., L. B. Wall and D. Collis were to-day re-elected as the finance committee of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association.

A Press Association message from Napier says that Mr A. E. Jull, a member of Parliament for the last twenty years, and chairman of the Napier Harbour Board, has announced his retirement from the chairmanship, to take effect after the next monthly meeting.

Mr T. Saunders was to-day re-elect-ed to the general committee of the Manawatu and West A. and P. Association, and Mr 1). Dickie was elected to fill a vacancy created by the elevation of Mr D. Thomas to the office of vice-president. A cable message from Sydney announces the death of lit. Rev. Gerard D’Arcy-Irvine, Anglican Bishop of Sydney, aged 70. The deceased gentleman was educated at the Grammar School, Napier, New Zealand, and later in New South Wales. He had been Bishop of Sydney since 1926. Born at AYandsworth, England, he was a son of Canon Gorges M. D’ArcyIrvine. He was ordained in 1885, and was curate of Newtown, Sydney in 1885-86.

A through passenger by tho Monowai, en route for the Dublin Congress, is Father H. O’Twomej' whose parish, Mt. Isa, north-west Queensland, is spread over an area of 42,000 square miles. Tho town of Mt. Isa, which has a population of about 4000, was nonexistent six years ago, its foundation having been caused by the finding of rich deposits of silver and lead in the vicinity. Father O’Twomey is accompanied by Father F. S. McNamara, of Waverley, New South AVales.

Mr E. W. Collins, of Newbury, has established a very fine record as a member of the school committee of that district, a period which he concluded at the householders’ meeting last evening. For about 30 years Mr Collins had been a member of the Newbury committee and had been chairman for 20 years. Last evening he expressed his wish to retire in favour of some of the- younger residents. Mr J. Shaw, his successor as chairman, warmly congratulated Mr Collins on his fine record and stated that he had set an example difficult to emulate. The school and the parents were losing the services of one who had regarded the interests of the children as of primary importance. The death occurred at Masterton yesterday of Mr G. C. Summered, for many years manager of the Masterton branch of Levin and Co., Ltd., and a very well-known resident of the district. Mr Summered, who was 66 years of age, filled a prominent place in public affairs. He was associated with tho Wairarapa Patriotic Association since its foundation in 1915, was honorary treasurer for a period, and chairman for two years. Mr Summerell was a member of tho council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce for 30 years, a vice-president for two years, and also served as president. He was a member of the committee of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association for many years, and was president in 1909-10. Mr Summerell also took a prominent part in the affairs of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society, of which organisation he was president in 1916. His association with the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club extended over tho past 31 years. He was honorary auditor of the club for 21 years, and had been a life member for the past four years. Mr Summered was transferred to Masterton from Wellington in 1900 as branch manager. He retired last year owing to ill-health. His wife predeceased him in 1927.
