GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY. The cold wind yesterday afternoon did not hamper in the slightest the success of the garden party held at the Girls’ High School. The well-laden stalls were fully patronised by parents and friends, as well as tho large number of old pupils who were present. Under the direction of tho lady principal, Mrs M. Rhodes, and with tlio help and co-operation of tli© Parents’ Association, tlio mistresses and the pupils, tho proceedings were carried to a most gratifying conclusion, and the funds of tho school should bo considerably augmented. Mr J. Louisson was a very efficient secretary. The Mayor, Mr A. E. Mansford, was introduced by Mr It. H. Billons, chairman of tho Parents’ Association, and officially declared tlio party open. Mr Mansford gavo thanks for tho invitation to be present and apologised for the absence of Mrs Mansford. He congratulated all those responsible for tho function on their splendid management, and remarked on the excellence of the cause—education—for which too much could not he done. He urged tho girls to make good use of the singular opportunities and foundation to be obtained at school, particularly during this timo of stress. Mr Mansford had much pleasure in declaring the function open and wished the promoters good luck. The girls responded with three cheers for the Mayor. Among those present during the afternoon were Mr J. Murray, rector of the Boys’ High School, nnd Mrs Murray. Mr J. A. Nash sent a message of goodwill and apology for the absence of Mrs Nash and himself.

The stall-holders were:—Produce: Mesdames M. Aitchison and A. Grigor, and Misses Robinson and Fraser. Sweets: Mi's H. Thorburn, Mrs A. H. Wright nnd Miss Peglar. Ice cream: Miss Hum©, assisted by tho Old Girls’ Association. Work and fancy goods: Mesdames Bristow, Andrews, Boagand J. Louisson, and Misses J. Mcßae, L. Brown and Iv. Birnie. Tho chocolate wheel, which was conducted by Mr W. Macpherson and Mr Bristow, was surrounded by an eager crowd. Results of tho competitions are as follow: —Assorted toffee (High School Girls): M. Edwards. Tolfee (open class), Mrs R. Edwards. Sponge cake: (Girls class), P. Barnard and Z. Smith; (open class). Miss B. Eannin and Miss V. Pitt. Needlework: Guest towel, J. Mansell (special). Fancy coat hanger: Miss Carlisle 1, H. Koehler 2. Original novelty (value not to exceed Is): P. Edwards 1, M. Wnldegravo 2. Novelty tea towel: J. Harris 1, C. Curtis 2.

Tho judges were Mrs Birnie and Mrs Durward (sweets and baking); Mrs W. L. Fitzherbert and Mrs Coombs (needlework). The drilling by seniors and juniors was worthy of tho highest praise, Miss R. Benstead being responsible for their training. Tlio girls drilled on the largo tennis court in front of the school, and an excellent view was obtained from the sloping bank. The folk dance of tho juniors—“ Ace of Diamonds”—was very pretty, and was well up to the standard of tlieir drill. Afternoon tea was served inside, where folding doors had been drawn back to provide ample room. ThoMtle tables were very attractive with their vases of bright flowers, and it was hard to imagine such a pretty “tea room” as a class-room. Those in charge of the tea arrangements were Mesdames Billens, D. Morrison, J. Sankey, Parkes and Misses McLeod, Rainforth, Hainswor.th and Cunningham. It was a delightful function, and was in every respect equal to those of former years. It is estimated that the funds will benefit by about £qo. Competitions drawn during the afternoon resulted: —Raffia purse, Mrs Barnard; jumper, Miss E. W. Birnie; vase, Miss Fraser; underskirt, Mrs Fannin; supper cloth, Mrs J. Wallace; bath salts and lavender, Mrs Grace; cake. Miss K. Birnie; brass vase, Miss Rawi Wright; tray cloth, Miss Robinson.
