MUNICIPAL ABATTOIRS.

COUNCIL AND BUTCHERS'. Further reference to the municipal abattoirs and the offer of the master butchers in the city to take them over was made at the meeting of the Palmerston North City Council last night when the works committee, in its report, stated: — ' “Cr Keeble, chairman of the abattoir committee, reported that, in accordance with a request from .the Minister of Agriculture, Cr Hodgeus, Mr Spilman and himself waited upon Hon. C. E. Macmillan at Wellington on the 9th instant when, the Minister detailed tho result, of the deputation of butchers which had recently waited upon him objecting to the council’s application for authority to increase the slaughtering fees. The Minister also stated that the butchers had informed him that they hod made an offer to the council to take over the slaughtering of stock, etc., and, on being assured that no such offer had been made, the Minister decided that he would write to the Master Butchers’ Association giving them seven days in which to make an offer and would give the council seven days in which to reply thereto, and, if they were unable to agree, he was prepared to meet both parties in Palmerston North for the purpose of effecting a settlement. “An offer from the Master Butchers’ Association dated March 12, 1932, was read intimating that they were prepared to. have the powers delegated to them to carry on the slaughtering of all stock required and were prepared to take a lease of the premises used for that purpose under the usual covenants, at a rental to provide the annual cost as set out in the. council’s statement as supplied to the butchers some time ago. “On the motion of Ur Keeble, seconded by Cr Hodgens, it was decided that the association be replied to stating that the council is unable to accept their offer, and that the Minister of Agriculture be immediately advised of the impossibility of, an agreement being reached between both parties, and requesting his attendance in Palmerston North for the purpose of effecting a settlement.”
